South Kensington – The Best Things in Life are Free

London is known for being an expensive city, but it doesn’t always have to be. Some of the best attractions here are actually free to visit – and South Kensington is the best place to explore them. There are plenty of things to do – and none of them will break the bank.

Head over to the Natural History Museum for awe-inspiring, life-size encounters with creatures both pre-historic and modern. The Victorian gothic revival entry hall is sure to take your breath away, whilst the vast number of interactive exhibits will keep you, and all the family, entertained for hours.

You can experience a simulated earthquake and journey on a giant escalator through the Earth’s core, while the more botanically-minded among us will enjoy the Darwin Centre’s gardens. There’s even an ice-skating rink during the winter season. It’s an absolute must-visit attraction in London.

Next door, the Science Museum offers a thrilling insight into the scientific underpinnings of the modern world. Life-size replicas of spaceships, actual aircraft, locomotives and historical technological artefacts are all on show. You can even learn about historical consumer electronics (although it’s hard not to feel old upon seeing a Nokia 3310 in a display case!). As you’d expect, the museum’s offering is increasingly cutting-edge, with a VR experience among its most recent additions.

For a more sedate experience, the nearby Victoria and Albert museum curates a huge range of artefacts from around the world – over 2.27 million of them. Those who appreciate the intricacies of applied design and handicraft will marvel at endless collections of chinaware, whilst the museum’s various traditional galleries offer a fine art experience.

Is the London sunshine filling you with guilt over these rainy-day activities? The beautiful Holland Park is a short walk away through beautiful Kensington, with its famous Kyoto garden, which is well worth a visit. Watch out for the bold but friendly peacocks which roam the park! This oasis of peace is the perfect spot for a walk through beautiful deciduous forests, or a spot of lunch in the cafe. You might even want to pop into the Design Museum, which – you guessed it – is also free to visit.
